The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 arrived in 2020 with much fanfare, following up on the controversial Nvidia Turing lineup with much-improved performance while dropping the price $100 from its predecessor.

This is a welcome change. When the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti launched, Nvidia courted a bunch of controversy by introducing these cards at higher price points. The RTX 2080 raised the price from Nvidia GTX 1080’s $549 (£469, AU$925) to $799 (£749, AU$1,199) while the RTX 2080 Ti went up from the GTX 1080 Ti’s $699 (£649, about AU$950) price tag to $1,199 (£1,099, AU$1,899).

It wasn’t a huge jump, therefore, for people to expect the same price increase on the next generation of RTX GPUs. Luckily for everyone, Nvidia seems to have taken cues from AMD, dropping the prices of its new Turing cards, albeit only slightly.

That’s while improving power efficiency and performance. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 provides a massive 50-80% boost in performance over the RTX 2080 at the same price point, not to mention a 20-30% boost to the RTX 2080 Ti, which is nearly twice as expensive.
